Monthly Status Update - August 2022

Hello, welcome to this month's status update post. Here I will be sharing what's been going on with AnimeThemes.moe, where we are heading, how to help, and inviting feedback.

Funding

The listing of last month's account balances and posted transactions can be found here.

Our operational expenses decreased by ~$20 and our rolling balance decreased by ~$25.

Thankfully, our rolling balance is decreasing at a slower rate. While not ideal, this is an improved situation from the last two months.

AnimeThemes.moe Development - The Audio-only Mode Release

The Audio-only Mode Release was deployed on August 27! You can now stream and share Audios from the site!

Releases are tagged here and here.

animethemes-server

This month we focused on improving mod tooling, support for local storage management & finalizing audio resource management for the Audio-only release. The full set of changes can be reviewed here

Additions

• Admin: Allow mods to perform storage actions from admin panel. Upload, Delete, Move, Rename and Reconcile Audio/Video can be done without external tooling. New moderators can be onboarded without needing credentials.
• Admin: Allow mods to override config values with database settings.
• Admin: Backfill Anime-Planet Anime Resources.

Fixes

• Admin: Parse sluggable IDs for Anime.
• Admin: Theme Slug autocomplete strict type failure.
• Admin: circumvent error when viewing resource with invalid ID by modifying model query.
• API: validate null values for top-level filter and sort parameters.
• Admin: Enforce stricter normalization of resource link formats.

Maintenance

• Refactor pipelines to action pattern.
• Test coverage for actions.
• Updating dependencies.
• Updating framework stubs.

This month we focused on implementing support for the new audio-only mode.

Additions

• Added audio-only mode.
  • You can toggle between video and audio mode using the switch under the player.
  • The mode you select will be saved for future visits.
• Added support for "as" field of artist memberships

Fixes

• Fixed wrong order of theme entries.
• Fixed studio cover background on studio page.
• Fixed wrong alignment of "My Profile" on mobile navigation.
• Fixed very long song titles not wrapping correctly.
• Fixed manual rebuilding.

animethemes-api-docs

• Fixed logo and favicon.
• Updated to latest alpha build of Vitepress.

animethemes-db-dump

animethemes-encoding-scripts

Last month we introduced Project KuroPon, an archive of source files and encoding scripts that can be used to generate encoded videos for our repositories.

Since then, we have created the AnimeThemes/animethemes-encoding-scripts repository to manage contributions and encourage collaboration.

If you are making encoding contributions to AnimeThemes, please send us a pull request or forward your encoding script to the mod team!

Again, the goal is to better future proof AnimeThemes and allow us to continue improving the quality of our work.

Backfilling Efforts

The primary backfilling effort this month was the initial seeding of Anime-Planet resources for Anime.

We are nearly completion with resource-related efforts and will soon be focused on anison data. If you are interested in helping us with these efforts, please reach out. These are time-consuming efforts and we can benefit from having more volunteers here.

Misc

Mod applications are still open. Now more than ever with our efforts widening and less of our team being active, we need some help delegating tasks out.

The backup torrent was updated 2022-07-01. The link can be found in the discord and in the one obvious place you should be able to find. The next update will be on 2022-10-01. We anticipate creating a separate torrent for audios. Seeding is appreciated.

We are still looking to staff at least 25 editors to help us backfill and build out our database. If you are interested in helping out, please reach out to para here or on the discord. We have a detailed description of the role in our #help_wanted channel on the discord.
