Seasonal Verification

Introduction

We want to identify encoding work from new seasonal anime in a timely manner. To accomplish this, we must review seasonal anime episodes for new or altered OP/ED sequences every day.

Identifying Seasonals

We coordinate the checking of seasonal anime on the AnimeThemes Seasonal Checking trello board. Each anime is represented by a card. Cards are labeled with contextual data such as the streaming services that have licesned the anime, whether the episode count is known, and whether the anime has many OPs, EDs or variants.

However, these listings may not be comprehensive. We should cross-reference other resources to ensure that coverage for the day is as comprehensive as possible.

Resources

  • Monthly.moe - A calendar of anime episode releases in your timezone (if you are authenticated). By default, the calendar view includes TV broadcasts, movie premieres and music releases.
  • Senpai.moe - Anime chart with MAL integration. Includes a tabular view for premieres and a weekly calendar view with approximate release times and platforms.
  • AnimeSchedule.net - Weekly Anime air times
  • FansubDB - A tabular view of premieres. Includes stations, platforms and groups.
  • Autolovepon - /r/anime's episode discussion bot
  • AnimeThemes Encoding Calendar

It might also be a good idea to regularly check public trackers for releases so that irregular broadcasts are not missed for services such as Netflix.

Verifying Seasonals

To verify an episode of seasonal anime, we should watch the episode and WebMs in side-by-side playback. It helps to maintain a local archive of our video repository if you can.

Sync audio between the two sources. Listen for any differences.

Look for changes in visuals and audio if the performance is the same.

Pay close attention to title cards in the OP and ED. Ensure that the episode's title card matches the WebM.

This is not an exact science. We are simply trying to catch differences in the audio/video. Use what approach works for you.

If we have identified a change, we should first determine if the change merits inclusion. AnimeThemes staff reserves the right to curate these changes. If the change is determined to be insignificant, we should leave a comment in the Seasonal Curation spreadsheet.

Whether or not the change should be included, we should update the card for the anime in the AnimeThemes Seasonal Checking trello board.

Each card has a checklist where each item represents an episode of the anime. When a staff member reviews the episode, they should check the checklist item or the episode number if it has not been marked completed. Staff may leave comments in the card activity feed for any helpful information about the anime and its themes.

If a new theme or variant has been found, we should create a card in the Ready for Encoding list of the AnimeThemes Encoding trello board. New cards should be labeled as "Seasonal" and either "New Sequence" for new themes, "New Variant" for new variants or "New" for new anime. New cards should also be placed above other cards in the Ready for Encoding list to indicate priority to encoders. Include any other helpful information that you can for the encoder such as the episode, suggested release and checklist of items representing each video needed for this unit of work.

Next, we should review and perform requisite data entry.

Data Entry

Here will detail the steps for requisite data entry for different scenarios.

Episode Count

It is important to verify that the episode count on the site is correct after checking each episode for new themes or variants.

A number with a dash 1- indicates that the theme entry has been playing continuously since the given episode, if the theme doesn't play or changes in a specific episode it is necessary to show this by writing the last episode in which it was played after the dash, for example if a new theme or version plays in episode 9, you should change the episode count from the theme entry page to say 1-8.

Continuing with the previous example, if in episode 10 the theme and variant played is the same as in the first 8 episodes you should indicate the skip between episodes 8 and 10 with a comma, like 1-8, 10
