Adding an Anime

First of all to add an anime, we need to add an entry in the Anime section. To do so click on Anime under the Resources and Wiki tab on the left, then click on Create Anime on the right.

  1. Title: Add the anime’s title. By default we use the same title as MAL.
    • If the Title already exists (i.e. Berserk, Shaman King), just add the year to the slug (i.e. shaman_king_2021)
  2. Year: Add the year the anime premiered in Japan, from MAL.
  3. Season: Add the season (Winter-Spring-Summer-Fall), from MAL.
  4. Synopsis: Add a synopsis of the show, possibly the most effective one. Use <br> for a line break.

You can now open the anime’s page in the Anime section. Here you can see a list of boxes, which contain the following information:

  • Synonyms
  • Themes
  • Series
  • External Resources
  • Images
  • Studios

Adding a Synonym

Adding a Synonym is fairly simple. You only need to click on Create Synonym (in the Anime section), then type in the synonym in the Text box. This feature is meant for alternative titles, licensed titles, common abbreviations and/or shortenings. Synonyms can be found on either MAL or AniDB. Try to add the English title as the first synonym if available.

Adding a Series

A Series is a group of Anime by related property, where there exist at least 2 entries. Therefore only animes with at least 2 entries are accepted, including movies and OVAs.

To add a Series you need to open its section. Click on Create Series, then type in the Name of the series. That’s the name that defines the entire series, like “Monogatari”, or “Yu-Gi-Oh!”.

Now we need to link the Series to its Anime entries. We can do that from the Series page or from the Anime page. Just click on Attach Anime / Attach Series and type in the search box the entry you’re looking for. You can also type in the ID of the Anime / Series you need.

Adding a Theme

To add a Theme you need to click on Create Theme (Anime section), then input the requested information. First of all the entry type (OP / ED) followed by the sequence number (leave blank if there is only one sequence), then the group (leave blank if it’s a normal OP / ED).

Lastly add the Song. If the song has already been added under Resources, it can be searched by its name or ID, otherwise you can easily add one with the Create Song button.

Now we need to add an Entry in this newly added Theme. As usual click the Create Entry button, and fill in the information following the guidelines under the text boxes. If there is more than one version, add more versions. A version of a theme means if it is the same song and artist, but different visuals usually.

Last step is to link a Video to this Entry. Just click on Attach Video, search by ID and confirm. You may have to edit the Video details if they are not accurate. Add the Resolution (height) and tick or choose the correct options based off the titling guidelines.

Note: If the theme also has a dubbed version, be sure to label it so in the group (as “Dubbed Version” and the original as “Original Japanese Version”). Also, change the slug as “OP-Dub” for the dubbed version and "OP-Original" for the original version. Same with repeat shows or other groupings. Create a group and change the slug.

Here is the list of special groups and their slugs.

Adding a Studio

To add a Studio you only need to click on Attach Studio (Anime section), then type in the studio in the Text box. Click the correct studio that pops down; it can be searched by name or ID. If it doesn’t exist, you can create the Studio in the Studio section on the left under Resources and Wiki You can also attach Anime or External Resources at the Studio page.

Studios can be found on either MAL, AniList, or AniDB. On AniDB, studios are usually labeled as Animation Work.

Adding External Resources

External Resources are links to other websites related to the entry they’re linked to. They can be found in any Anime, Artist, or Studio entry.

Open the External Resources section on the left, then proceed with Create External Resource. Choose the site, then input the link (ex. A link to an anime, such as https://anilist.co/anime/124194). The numbers part of the link is the External ID (124194 in this case). Then you can link this External Resource to an Anime, Artist, or Studio the same way as linking a Series to an Anime. You can also attach External Resources on the Anime section if it already exists.

For Kitsu, you can find the External ID by pasting this https://kitsu.io/api/edge//anime?filter[text]=fruits-basket-the-final into your browser. The part after [text] should match with the Kitsu name of the anime link. The External ID should usually be the number after the first “id” (43578 in this case). The name should match with the name next to “slug”. You can also check by replacing the title with the External ID on the link (https://kitsu.io/anime/43578).

If there is more than one external resource for a type, such as mulitple Twitter or Official Websites, you can differentiate by specifying the Save As part when attaching. Also, don't forget to get rid of the trailing "/".

Adding Images

This step is very similar to Adding External Resources. Following the same procedure, instead of adding a link you have to add an Image. Select the type of the Image (small/large) and confirm. You can find images on MAL, Anilist, AniDB, or Google. You can also reverse image search the image to find higher quality images. For hard to find images, try searching the anime and song name in Japanese on Twitter and use the image from the artist's profile picture.

Linking Images to an Anime, Artist, or Studio can be done both from the Image page or from the Anime / Artist page. Try uploading images with the following resolution:

  • Large: At least 400x600px
  • Small: 100x150px
    • Using a resizer works to create a small image. Be sure to keep the dimensions proportional
    • Try for more vertical images than horizontal ones (around 2:3 aspect ratio). You can check with MediaInfo.
    • You can check how it looks here. Just put in the link of the image.

Adding an Artist

This step is similar to Adding an Anime. From the Artist section add the new Artist and input its name.

In an Artist’s page, Songs, External Resources and Images can be added. They should have already been created, so you only need to click on Attach, then input the Name (songs and external resources only) or ID. If the artist is credited as a character for the song, input the character name in Save As.

An Artist might be a group of Artists, for example seiyuu units. In this case you can add its members in the Members section (note that the members must have already been added to the wiki).

If instead the artist is part of a group, add the Group(s) in the Group section. As with Members, the Group must have been already added (make another Artist entry for the Group). You can check if an artist is in a group under Related Entries on AniDB.

Pages

You can now edit wiki pages on Pages under Document. Learning markdown might be helpful.

Workflow

Here are some tips and ways to optimize the wiki contribution workflow.

Note: For Anime, attaching the MyAnimeList external resource will automatically prime a backfill of the other external resources, images, and studio.
